$42 billion stimulus package: NSW industry briefing

Infra SydneyOn Tuesday, an industry briefing was held by the NSW Government to answer questions on the roll out of education and housing facilities in NSW from the Federal Government's $42 billion Nation Building package.

The Hon Premier Nathan Rees MP and Senator the Hon Mark Arbib gave the keynote addresses. Senator Arbib has recently been appointed Parliamentary Secretary of Governance and Service Delivery.

They were followed by a presentation from Taskforce Chairman, Bob Leece and an opportunity for question from the floor.

Social Housing

In NSW, the stimulus package equates to 6,000 new social housing homes to be constructed over the next two years at a cost of $2 billion. The NSW Government will continue its program of the new supply of social housing in this period, contributing approximately $350 million and delivering 1,500 social housing dwellings.

Stage One of this package involves bringing forward construction of social housing dwellings which are already planned and approved.

Tendering for this stage closes on 9 April. Click here  for more information.

Commencing in June 2010, Stage Two of the package involves a Commonwealth Government approved tender for new construction, including the spot purchases of house and land packages for use in social housing.

The Commonwealth has also allocated $130 million for repairs and maintenance of existing social housing stock. This housing boost package is expected to generate almost 37,000 jobs in NSW.

Education Revolution

Over the two years, construction and upgrade works across all NSW Public Schools will total $2.7 billion. The package of education infrastructure in NSW will total $3.2 billion.

Expressions of interest from schools have been sought and tenders for Managing Contractors in the Department of Education's regions have been called.
